Aberdare Community School in Aberdare, South Wales, is more than your average secondary school. With the new state of the art Michael Sobell Leisure Centre and over 1,500 school places, a new ‘super-school’ was formed from the merger of Aberdare High School, Aberdare Girls’ School and Blaengwawr Comprehensive School.
This £32m project, delivered by Laing O’Rourke, is the first project secured through the Southeast Wales Schools and Public Buildings Contractor Framework (SEWSCAP). A new school campus and leisure centre, complete with multi-use games areas, athletics track and sports stadium were included in this redevelopment project. Working alongside Atkins and Crown House Technologies, Abacus produced a lighting solution to light both sport and amenity areas.
Abacus’ fixed columns were installed along the pathways and cycle stores. These columns blend into the new modern environment of the school and leisure centre, with shield-shaped flush doors allowing for maintenance access. Manufactured from tubular steel and galvanised for longevity, general maintenance of fixed columns can be undertaken on foot whilst lighting maintenance requires the use of a cherry picker. Apollo LED luminaires were used in order to further reduce the level of maintenance required.
With reliable high performance LEDs, the Apollo gives a consistent level of lighting, helping to ensure onsite safety and security for school & leisure centre users. Its streamlined body is designed to be easily accessible for maintenance purposes, allowing for quick and simple checks of the internal components and LED modules. The modular design of this fitting means that LED modules are replaceable and upgradeable across all models in the Apollo range, thus reducing the cost of re-lamping or the need to purchase replacement luminaires.
Abacus’ proven Raise and Lower columns have been used across a range of applications with these versatile columns proving ideal for the informal sports area. The installation and maintenance capabilities are ideal for school applications, with time on both being kept to a minimum. The reduction of downtime, combined with reduced maintenance costs, works well with both school scheduling and budgetary requirements. The base-hinged design allows lighting and any other equipment attached to the column to be safely lowered for maintenance at ground level. Rhea floodlights were mounted on these columns. Designed with toughened front glass to protect the lamp and a die-cast aluminium body, the Rhea floodlight is ideal in an informal sports setting where a range of games may take place. This compact 1kW floodlight contains an integral baffle to ensure high performance lighting, with excellent glare limitation and reduced light overspill.
